Psychiatric Service Dog Owner Training Program in 3 Steps:
Part 1 👉 Part 2 👉 Part 3

Canine Assistance Puerto Rico helps individuals alleviate the impacts of mental impairments on their life. The choices your dog makes as a pet, directly affect what tasks they perform as a service dog.

P1
Foolproof Behavior Training
For all dogs at any stage
Prerequisite: Initial Assessment [IA]
A Service Dog can be a life-changing intervention for a person with a disability. However, not every person who wishes to benefit from a dog is a suitable candidate for a service dog. There are pre-requisites needed to ensure the health and safety of the service dog in training and the public and service dogs represent considerable investments of time, energy and finances, from the process of acquiring the service dog through the entire working life of the dog (approximately 8-10 years).
Foolproof Behavior Training Part 1 ["FBTP1"] is a 12 week intimidation-free relationship based training course focusing on the fundamentals of canine communications and developing the ability to understand and read the signals dogs communicate in the moment and teaches owners how to reduce reactivity, form a deeper and trusting connection. You'll learn a lot about self and dogs.

If you continue to pursue learning behavior and relationship based training further, it is highly recommended to take Foolproof Behavior Training Part 2 ["FBTP2"]. To qualify for our Service Dog Owner Training Program it is required to learn the fundamentals of training a supportive pet by resolving jumping/ barking and high stress behaviors in dogs.

A course for the general public * No certificate is given

P2
Foolproof Behavior Training
For all dogs at any stage
Prerequisite: IA, FBTP1
Candidates must go through rigorous socialization training that spans a prolonged period of time which can start from puppyhood. A dog that demonstrates boisterous behavior, nuisance barking, hackles-up, growling, showing teeth, lunging, biting, aggression, excessive fear, or inappropriate elimination is not ready for service dog training. Therefore our objective is to produce a supportive well-trained, confident, and trustworthy companion dog that can begin to improve quality of life which also saves lives.
Teaching the practical applications of FBTP1, Foolproof Behavior Training P2 trains relaxation and socialization skills that connect with a dog on a deeper level. Helping dogs feel safe and secure.

Problem solving real-time reactivity concepts, evidence / relationship based methods, practical training exercises, and behavior modification are the focus of this course.

Benefits Includes:
-
Advance cooperation to pass other animals nicely on and/or off leash
-
Resolving problem behaviors for over-excited, anxious, fearful, or aggressive dogs
-
Advancing leash handling skills
-
Training an amazing pet

A course for the general public * AKC certificate is given

Service Dog Owner Training Program
Qualified Applicants only
Prerequisite: IA, FBTP1, FBTP2
(over-excitement issues must be resolved to qualify)
Ensuring eligibility for Service Dog Owner Training requires trainability to transform a pet into a Psychiatric Service Dog by successfully completing FBTP1 and FBTP2.
Every dogs begins from basic to advanced obedience, to navigating public spaces, performing complex disability mitigating tasks for their handler, and training takes at least 10 months complete. However without help the process can be difficult, overwhelming, and unsuccessful. Getting support from our specialized and knowledgeable trainers makes the process easier.
However, being a service dog means being put in many different environments and exposed to stressors that not all dogs are suited for. It is simply not fair to the dog to put them through those situations if they are not happy and thriving doing the work.

CAPR has clear treatment goals that will ensure the dog has a 97% chance at successfully completely understanding your needs and responding appropriately in stressful environments to mitigate or alleviate debilitating behavior, learning, and/or movements that are psychological symptoms in-public settings and at home. You will learn how to be an effective service dog team and handler in a sufficient amount of time.

We advocate for affordability so that an individual such as you or a loved one can receive some relief of symptoms in public without incurring financial difficulty. Therefore our programs are affordable.

*Training Certificate and Training Verification is given.
