Service Dog Training Eligibility
Acceptance & Eligibility Standards

This page outlines eligibility considerations used within our service dog training program. These guidelines help determine whether a dog is appropriate for assessment and continued training.

Canine Assistance Puerto Rico does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or sexual orientation.
Acceptance into service dog training is criteria-based. Completion of the application process does not guarantee acceptance.
Applicants must demonstrate the physical, cognitive, and logistical capacity to responsibly care for, handle, and live with a service dog in daily life. This includes the ability to manage the dog safely, communicate consistently, and provide appropriate care, housing, exercise, and veterinary support.
Applicants must demonstrate readiness for a full-time canine partnership, including a realistic understanding of the dog’s emotional and physical needs and the impact of constant accompaniment on daily routines.
Completion of Part 1 — Foundation (Required) and Part 2 — Reliability (Earned) is mandatory prior to eligibility for service dog training.
All required documentation must be submitted in full, including veterinary recommendation, liability and consent agreements, and identification as applicable.
Participation requires compliance with follow-up policies and procedures. Failure to comply may result in removal from the program and return of issued equipment.
Applicants are responsible for their own transportation, accommodations, and attendant care during all training activities.
Tuition is non-refundable once training begins.
